Molecular and Cellular Basis of Diseases
Since 2002, the Molecular and Cellular Basis of Diseases (MCBD) PhD program has successfully provided excellent training opportunities for students from all over the world. As a PhD student, you will have the opportunity to work on exciting research projects in genetics, biochemistry, molecular cell biology, and oncology, including aspects of anticancer-immunity.
Our multi-disciplinary program combines basic, hypothesis driven research with clinical research, allowing you to acquire a broad skill-set necessary for a successful career in basic and applied biomedical sciences.
Your research project will be supervised by one of your faculty members and a PhD committee. Comprehensive training is accomplished through a core curriculum that includes selected lectures and hands-on methods courses. A dynamic seminar program, which includes presentations and discussions of research projects, complements this training plan. Direct interactions with your peers and faculty are an integral part of daily life in MCBD-affiliated laboratories at the Medical University of Innsbruck throughout the year.
The minimum duration of study required to obtain a PhD degree in Austria is six semesters. Therefore, 180 ECTS credits are required. Of these, 160 ECTS are credited for the thesis and 20 ECTS are credited for curricular courses within the MCBD program.
The 20 ECTS must be obtained through three types of courses: core subjects (8-10 ECTS), seminars (6 ECTS), and general subjects (4-6 ECTS)

Throughout the duration of the PhD, between 8 (minimum) and 10 (maximum) ECTS must be collected from a defined range of lectures and courses. These can be classified into three categories: Method Courses, Joint Group Seminars and Scientific Meetings and Conferences. 4 ECTS can also be obtained from core subjects of other PhD programs of the Medical University of Innsbruck, providing extra flexibility.
MCBD Methods Courses
The method courses provide an opportunity to learn or deepen a range of skills in different scientific areas. They can be chosen and combined freely. To enroll in a methods course, please send an e-mail to the PhD School office (phd-school@i-med.ac.at) stating the course title you are interested in. Please register no later than three days after the semester starts.

Joint Group Seminars
To broaden your scientific perspective and connect with research areas beyond your own laboratory, you are required to attend group meetings hosted by other research groups within the MCBD faculty.
As part of the program requirements, you must attend four group meetings per semester throughout the three-year program. The list of participating laboratories and the contacts can be found here. Please contact the PIs before visiting the group-meetings. Use the Joint group seminar form and submit it to the MCBD office at the end of the semester. Alternatively, attendance at different seminar series is also accepted (e.g. Biocenter Seminar, AISCM seminar series,..)
Scientific Meetings and Conferences
Scientific meetings and conferences can also be used to collect a maximum of 2 ECTS. The credits will be awarded depending on the duration of the conference. Presenting a poster presentation or a talk is mandatory. These credits can be assigned to either core subjects or general subjects, but not both. Please use the latest version of form here.
The MCBD PhD Seminar Series provides an opportunity to present your PhD project and share your research progress with fellow PhD students and members of the faculty. It also offers a valuable forum for scientific discussion, feedback, and exchange across research groups. Attendance is mandatory for six semesters, and each student is required to give three presentations during the course of the program.
The seminar takes place every Wednesday at 12:00 (Histology lecture Hall) during the semester. The speaker schedule is available in the table below.

Examples include Good Scientific Practice, statistics, research ethics, Python programming, and many other subjects. As part of the curriculum, students must complete 4–6 ECTS in general subjects. These lectures and courses cover a broad range of transferable skills and topics that complement your research but are not specific to the MCBD program.
